In Louisiana, successors may file an affidavit of heirship (vehicles only) to claim the motor vehicle of a deceased loved one, whether the loved one died without a will, or with a will that did not specify how to transfer the title of a motor vehicle. Sometimes, if a surviving spouse or other close relative of the deceased wishes to transfer the title of an inherited motor vehicle to a non-related person, both the surviving family member and the inheriting individual can file the affidavit of heirship to transfer the title. The Affidavit of Heirship (vehicles only) must be filed with the Louisiana DMV.
